A true reggae legend, Gregory Isaacs, has passed away. His voice and styling were unique - with an appeal only matched by the likes of Dennis Brown, Bob Marley and Johnny Clarke. There is a great obituary here.

The Strides, who fuse reggae, afrobeat and dub, play at the Vanguard in Newtown tonight, 2 April, and tommorrow night, 3rd April, at the Brass Monkey in Cronulla. The band features the vocal talents of Ras Roni, recently of the Resurrectors. I saw them perform at the Forum in support of Tony Allen the other week and they put on an impressive and fun show.

Last night Dateline, the SBS current affairs program, aired a report on police violence in Jamaica. Despite the somewhat awkward intro from George Negus, the report itself is good. Of course you can only scratch the surface in 10 to 15 minutes, and the problems of crime and violence in Jamaica are complicated. Anyow here's a link to the video

In 1972 a Jamaican Rastaman named JJ Roberts arrived in Sydney with his Australian wife, Cheryl. JJ was a ‘sound man’, someone who had witnessed first hand the development of reggae in his homeland, Point Hill, St Catherine in Jamaica, and in England via the unique institution of the heavyweight sound system.

JJ Roberts yearned for the real sound system experience in his new home and by 1974 had established his own ‘set’, a genuine Jamaican sound system which he dubbed SOULMAKER . At a time when rock ruled in Australia, SOULMAKER brought a real Caribbean alternative to ears unaccustomed to anything much beyond Harry Belafonte singing ‘Day O’.

For 35 years, JJ and (in later years his sons Jono and Danny) have maintained a true Jamaican presence in Australia, keeping pace with the changes in the island’s music from its deep roots period through to the dancehall revolution that is now at the cutting edge of electronic music making.

To pay tribute to SOULMAKER’s 35 year tradition of bringing Jamaican sounds to Australian ears and acknowledge 30 years since Bob Marley’s visit here, an authentic reggae celebration has been planned.

Saturday May 2, 2009 at a warehouse venue in the inner west of Sydney, SOULMAKER will bring the finest floor-shaking cuts of Jamaican music to the music-hungry people of Sydney. With Father JJ at the helm, alongside Danny Ranks and special guests on the mic, selectors Don Jaro and D'varo, Jah Bya (Sound Revolution) and Senor Bambu (Unity Sounds), this will a history-making night of the highest order.

"Slim Smith (born Keith Smith, 1948, Kingston, Jamaica, died 1973) was a ska, rocksteady and reggae singer, who has been described as "the greatest vocalist to emerge in the rocksteady era".[1]

Smith first came to prominence as a member of the Victors Youth Band, who were highly praised at the 1964 Jamaican Festival.[2] He subsequently became a founding member and lead vocalist of The Techniques, who recorded primarily with Duke Reid for his Treasure Isle label. In 1964 they recorded several songs for Byron Lee, two of which, "Don't Do It" and "No One", were included on the "The Real Jamaica Ska" LP released by Epic Records and co-produced by Curtis Mayfield[3]. After the Techniques disbanded in 1965, he formed The Uniques, who released a handful of singles, before Smith visited Canada where he recorded an album, Toronto '66, which almost instantly sank into obscurity.

On his return to Jamaica, he commenced recording for Prince Buster and Coxsone Dodd's Studio One label, the main rival to Duke Reid. His Studio One recordings brilliantly highlight his passionate, soulful voice, which had an almost manic edge, and confirm him as one of Jamaica's greatest singers. His hits from this period include "The New Boss", "Hip Hug" and "Rougher Yet", many of which were later compiled for the album Born To Love. In 1967 he formed a new version of The Uniques, and commenced his association with producer Bunny Lee. They topped the Jamaican hit parade with "Let Me Go Girl", but after recording one album, Absolutely The Uniques, Smith left the group, staying with Lee to concentrate on a solo career.

He had a hit almost immediately with "Everybody Needs Love". An album of the same name quickly followed, as did many further hits. By 1972 personal problems led to him being detained at Bellevue sanatorium.

Smith died in 1973. Unable to gain entry to his parents' house, he broke a window, badly lacerating his arm. He bled to death before he could receive treatment.[4] His death stunned Jamaica. Still widely regarded as one of Jamaica's great vocalists, his enduring popularity has resulted in the reissue of the bulk of his work." - wikipedia

Well Sydney is blessed this long weekend, with plenty happening. On Friday night there is Reggae Club at Taylors on Central. On Saturday night there are three gigs. Firehouse alongside Messenjah (from NZ) at Hermann's, Surgeon General's Yagga Yow 3 at the Equilibrium Bar & Good Timez at the Loft Bar. On Sunday you can recover down at Sydney Park, St Peters, with Dub Club - picnic stylee

King Tide, the mighty kings of rebel music, play at the Annandale Hotel this Friday night, 19 September. Supported by Basslines sound and the Sticky Fingers.

Well this little blog has been pretty inactive, however still out there. Not getting out much (even missed the last Firehouse dance), but Lawless St is going out live to air week in and week out, with the Professor generally doing the first show of the month. I've also started placing broadcasts up at Podomatic again - so check there or Ozreggae.com for playlists.

Anyhow this Thursday night I'll be playing at Reggae on a School Night. And on Saturday the Professor is taking part in Sydney's 45 Shoot Out - all guns balzing! Robojase will also be there, selecting for Freedom Sound.
